Karpandi Women's centre

The name Karpandi (Kaurna word meaning ‘to support’) was chosen because the centre provides support to indigenous women and children experiencing homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, domestic and family violence, mental illness and parenting issues.The Centre seeks to address these issues through emotional, social and practical support, advocacy, women and children’s programs, counselling and referral to appropriate services.

Karpandi Women’s Centre is located at 210 Wright Street, Adelaide and is part of Baptist Community Services, WestCare.

The name Karpandi (Kaurna word meaning ‘to support’) was chosen because the centre provides support to indigenous women and children experiencing homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, domestic and family violence, mental illness and parenting issues.

The Centre seeks to address these issues through emotional, social and practical support, advocacy, women and children’s programs, counselling and referral to appropriate services.

There is a special focus on children aged 0-12 years who, in company of their parents/caregivers, frequent the CBD. Particular focus will be on children and their play/learning needs.

Outreach Support
An Outreach Worker will work with individual women, parents/carers and children to provide practical, one to one support by linking them to relevant services and providing case management.

Women’s and Children’s Programs
Karpandi facilitates a variety of activities and supports such as mothers’ groups, art and craft programs, health services, employment & training opportunities, crisis counselling, and advocacy for housing and accommodation needs.

Other programs can be arranged depending on client interest/demand. These may include cooking, self-esteem and personal development, storytime, school holiday programs, computing, literacy & numeracy, sewing, adventure break camps etc.

Drop In Centre
Karpandi has facilities for women to shower/bath, do laundry, watch television or videos, use the Playstation, and to participate in art, cooking in the kitchen, or have a place to just relax and be supported.


Staff
Karpandi is a service for women and children only. The staff are all women although professional males may provide support services and programs where appropriate.
